What is NDIS Capacity Building?

NDIS Capacity

Capacity building, within the context of the NDIS, refers to activities and supports aimed at developing a person’s skills, capabilities, and opportunities to participate meaningfully in society. It encompasses a range of strategies and interventions that empower individuals to achieve their goals, build resilience, and engage with their communities effectively.

Capacity Building Supports are designed to help build skills and independence in your daily life, and to help you pursue your goals. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) will assess your needs, and your short and long-term goals during a planning meeting to help identify which Capacity Building Supports might need to be funded. It’s important to know that you will not necessarily be funded for all the Capacity Building Supports categories.

NDIS Capacity Building Support Categories

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia provides support to people with disabilities to help them achieve their goals and improve their quality of life. The NDIS offers various support categories, including Capacity Building supports, which are designed to help individuals build their skills, independence, and participation in the community. Here are the main Capacity Building support categories under the NDIS:

  • Improved Daily Living: This category focuses on developing skills for daily tasks such as personal care, household tasks, meal preparation, and managing personal finances. It also includes supports for accessing and participating in the community.
  • Improved Relationships: These supports aim to enhance social skills, communication, and relationship-building abilities. They can include assistance with social activities, building peer relationships, and developing interpersonal skills.
  • Improved Health and Wellbeing: This category covers supports related to physical and mental health, including therapies, exercise programs, health-related equipment, and programs to improve overall well-being and independence.
  • Improved Learning: Supports under this category are geared towards improving educational outcomes and skills development. This can include tutoring, assistance with educational activities, and support for transitioning between educational settings.
  • Improved Workforce Participation: These supports are aimed at enhancing skills and opportunities for employment or meaningful work. This can include job coaching, skills development programs, supported employment, and assistance with job-seeking activities.
  • Improved Social and Community Participation: This category focuses on supporting individuals to engage in social and recreational activities, access community services, and participate in community events and groups. It aims to promote inclusion and participation in community life.
  • Improved Life Choices: This category encompasses supports related to decision-making, self-management, and goal setting. It includes supports such as plan management, support coordination, and training for self-advocacy and self-determination.

It’s important to note that the specific supports and services available under each Capacity Building category may vary based on individual needs and goals outlined in the participant’s NDIS plan. Participants work with their NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to determine the most appropriate supports to include in their plan to achieve their goals and improve their capacity in various areas of life

How does capacity building make a difference?

There are numerous activities and objectives that can be accomplished using your capacity building funds. This aspect, being one of the more specialized supports in an NDIS plan, allows for accessing flexible, empathetic, and tailored care to ensure goal achievement. Below are some of the objectives and activities that you can consider utilizing your Capacity Building funds for:

  • Securing employment in the open job market
  • Using public transport or taxis for travel
  • Household cleaning
  • Meal preparation
  • Financial management
  • Personal care management
  • Grocery shopping
  • Engaging in recreational activities (e.g., sports, art, etc.)
  • Enhancing social skills and confidence through group activities with peers
  • Participating in work or daytime activities

Given the range of goals and supports available, it can be challenging to pinpoint where to focus efforts. Therefore, early prioritization of needs during your plan application or review is crucial, as funding will be distributed across nine different categories that specifically guide fund utilization.

Using nutrition as an example, a Core Support might be having your daily meals prepared and delivered to you, whereas Capacity Building support will provide you with the skills and education to prepare nutritionally-balanced meals yourself. So, if one of your goals is to be more active in your community, you might receive Capacity Building support in the form of learning skills to manage your behavior, or having a support worker attend social activities with you until you are confident and have the skills to attend on your own.
