What is Stoma care?
A stoma is an artificial opening created surgically on the body to divert the flow of bodily waste or fluids. It serves as a pathway for the elimination of urine, stool, or other bodily substances that would normally exit the body through natural routes.
There are different types of stomas, each serving a specific purpose:
1. Gastrostomy Stoma: This type of stoma is created in the stomach and is used for feeding when a person is unable to consume food orally. A tube is inserted through the stoma to provide nutrition directly into the stomach.
2. Colostomy Stoma: A colostomy stoma is made from the colon (large intestine) and is used when a portion of the colon needs to be bypassed or removed. Stool is diverted through the stoma into a colostomy bag attached to the abdomen.
3. Ileostomy Stoma: An ileostomy stoma is created from the ileum (the last part of the small intestine). It is used when the entire colon and rectum are removed or bypassed. Stool is diverted through the stoma into an ileostomy pouch or bag.
4. Urostomy Stoma: A urostomy stoma is made from a section of the urinary system, typically the ureters. It is used when the bladder is removed or if urine needs to be diverted from the bladder. Urine is collected in a urostomy pouch attached to the abdomen.
Stoma care involves maintaining the cleanliness and health of the stoma and the surrounding skin to prevent infection and other complications. Proper care includes regular cleaning, using appropriate stoma appliances, ensuring a secure fit of the pouching system, and monitoring for any signs of complications or changes in the stoma.
